Came in on friday and enjoyed some cream ales and laughs beside the campfire. Up early for hunting, first set at telfers didn’t produce any birds. Mid morning across the river, had a massive Tom with two Hens but would not leave hens.

Next on the list is some AK/AR shooting and Bills 50 cal.

Well its been a busy couple weeks since I’ve updated,  and I’m not trying to make excuses but its PRIMETIME in the woods.

Let me first catch you op to speed on events over the last few weeks.

Honey Bear Down
The Buckhorn Honey bear who attacked our beehives was legally harvested on October 30th. The “Buckmaster” Mark Sr. harvested his third black bear with a bow. This is quite a feat to have taken down that many bears with a bow. He was a not a fully mature bear but I guess you could say that he had it coming ; )

First Buck w/ Bow

This past weekend was my last weekend of bow hunting before gun season. I saw plenty of Rut activity on Saturday, and with high temperature things slowed down on Sunday morning. Being the picky hunter that I am, I have passed a few decent bucks with my bow but this guy was just to easy to turn down. He had some really messed up antlers and it was time to remove him the gene pool. It was a perfect 20yd shot, double lung, but he still ended up taking off about 150 yards. Thanks to Matt and the Buckmaster, we were able to track this 5pt buck who had expired in the thicket.

Duck Hunt in Greece, NY with Mikus.  Saw Plenty of Ducks, but we were clearly a little rusty with our shooting.

Duck Bag: 0

Deer Bag: 0

Goose Bag: 0

Its still early! Stay tuned folks!

Buckhorn outdoors hooked up with the Duck Brothers and hunted a field scouted by Northeasternoutdoors.com member, JT. This was the post hunt wrap up as there wasn’t much to report from the field.

Hunt took place in Pavilion, NY on opening day. We saw LOTS of geese, but our set up was a little suspect and birds were reluctant to Lock N’ Land.

Hunters in attendance: Swerves, Mikus, Jmac, JT, Stoltron, and Mr. T

Sad to report tonight that our Honey Bees were attacked by Black Bears today. Both hives were new this year and thriving.

We had electric fence surrounding their hives which the bears attempted to break through over the weekend. We fixed them up, but it looks like they were able to tolerate the pain. They climbed right over the fence this time and got to the honey. Very sad to see this happen as Honey Bee are amazing creatures and very fascinating to watch. RIP Stolte Bees……

Trail Cam Pics

19Oct11

Just a few Slobs that my brother Matt picked up on his Moultrie Trail Cams last week. No Big Deal!

Looks like two different deer,  one with the Tall Antlers, and the other big boy with the claw looking split fork. No we do not give our deer nicknames like the tool boxes on the outdoor channel, but feel free to name them of you would like.

Ill call him “Success” whens hes hanging in my man cave

Ok, so this is WAYYYY overdue, but I’m dedicating myself to writing this year to stay up to date. So before I get to far into 2011 I am re-capping the success we had at Deer Camp last season. I think the pictures speak for themselves, it was a banner year for the Stolte’s. Dad shot this nice 10pt the second week of gun season, and my brother Matt shot this beauty the last weekend on the season! Several does were harvested as well by myself and a few family/friends who came out.

I cant stress enough how important deer management and food plots were to the success that we had this past year. Mark Sr. started with food plots about 5 years ago and we are finally starting to see the fruits of his labor. Its really a simple equation: Food brings the Does, the Does bring the bucks, and letting the little ones grow.

So heres to 2011! Best of luck out there

After the bow-season kick off last night, the early morning wake up was rough, but we got into the woods before light. Weather was decent and wind was cooperating. I passed on a young 8pt buck around 7:30am and a young doe and spike buck caught me off guard around 9am. I went for my bow and the low wood stand I was in didn’t give much cover as the deer were above me. No other sightings from Matt and Dad this morning.

Afternoon hunt was much less exciting. We got into the stand a little late and kicked up a bunch of Does getting into the stand. I sat in a big steel stand overlooking the hill along the “house gang” property line. A steady rain keep the deer activities to a minimum, come to find out they were all in the fields. Note to self, When its raining, stay low…..

Like any opening weekend, it must start off with a bang! Usually a large buck is a great way to kick off the first week of the season, but none the less a BBQ will do. The Camp buckhorn boys left camp to meet up with the crew at www.Northeasternoutdoors.com for a season kick-off dinner. Steaks and stories were shared and many Genny’s were drank. It looks like this could be an annual event for the buckhorn boys, good times. (No more details are needed, what happens at deer camp, stays at deer camp!)

The Northeastern Outdoors crew is a great bunch of guys and is hosting its inaugural Big Buck contest this year for any NY hunters who want to take part. All are welcome so let me know, or register on their website.

This picture sums up the morning hunt.
